How do online consultations create value for diabetes care?

Peter Adolfsson on online consultations

Diabetes care costs the NHS about £10 billion every year [1] – a 10% of the NHS budget for England and Wales [2]. The biggest percentage of this expense, however, comes from complications related to advanced cases of diabetes, such as strokes, amputations, and kidney failures [1], as well as the impact of diabetes the management of the condition shared by 4 million Britons in their quality of life. How can that picture change when online consultations are introduced? A specialist doctor from Sweden has tried and shares his experience.

Peter Adolfsson, Paediatrician and Head of paediatric diabetes operations in the Swedish region Halland, has years of experience in managing diabetes and coaching his patients, so we were more than keen to listen in on how he has used digital health and how he applied online consultations in the diabetes care flow. 10 years ago, he received an award on treatment of childhood diabetes, with a focus on non-commercial innovations that improve the health and quality of life for children and adolescents with diabetes and since then, he has been exploring new ways of how digital technology can support his care service and his patients.

Peter Adolfsson is dedicated to providing personalised care to his patients and creating care plans that suit each individual’s needs and lifestyle better – because he knows well that this is the most influencing factor in improving the quality of life for patients, giving them the best tools to manage their condition as independently as possible, and ultimately, avoiding serious complications, that impact the patients’ lives as well as the healthcare system most profoundly.

A part of this platform Peter has created is online consultations. In this interview, Peter Adolfsson tells us more about how he uses Visiba Care to make his everyday processes, workflow, and appointments digital, how he uses asynchronous messaging for diabetes management, the impact on the patients’ independence as well as their attitudes towards online consultations, and he generously provides valuable tips for other healthcare providers who want to digitally transform their patient pathways.
